Turmberg Durlach
Karlsruhe's local mountain, home to Germany's oldest observation tower. The Turmbergbahn funicular is currently being rebuilt, so the climb is on foot.
The Turmberg is Karlsruhe's classic vantage point. The square keep of the former castle is the oldest observation tower in Germany, and on a clear day the view reaches all the way to the Palatinate Forest. Important for planning: the 1888 Turmbergbahn funicular has been out of service since March 2026 while it is rebuilt with step-free access, and is scheduled to reopen at the end of 2027. Until then the way up is the Turmberg staircase (as of 23 August 2026, source: VBK).
